Mrs. Sara J. Otte, 71, of North Vernon, passed away on August 11, 2017, at Columbus Regional Hospital. She was born on April 30, 1946, in Seymour, to the late Dale and Vera (Melton) McDonald. She married Merrell J. Otte on March 26, 1967, he survives. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Borchers. She was a housewife and retired bank teller.
Sara loved her family and one of the happiest days of her life is when she learned she would be a grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Sara was a heck of a cook and loved to bake, she was known for coconut cream pies and homemade angel food cakes. She was a member of Winding Waters Quilters Club, and enjoyed traveling with them. She loved her flowers, hummingbirds, butterflies and gardening.
Sara is survived by her husband of 50 years, Merrell J.; her children, Tammi (James) Reinbold, Laura (Ken) Fries, and James (Betsy Cornett) Otte; three grandchildren, Macy, Billy and Emily; and three sisters, Patty, Sue and Janet.
She is preceded by her parents.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 15, at 10:30 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Borchers, with Rev. Stephen Wood officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Borchers.
Family and friends may call at Voss & Sons Funeral Service on Monday, August 14, from 4-8 pm, and at the church on Tuesday, from 9:30 am until time of service.
Memorials may be written to American Heart Association or St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Borchers, in care of Voss & Sons Funeral Service.

Garden Accent Stone - 'Wherever a beautiful soul...' was purchased for the family of Sara Otte.

I met Sara in High School and she was always very sweet and kind. My sincerest condolences to Sara's family and friends.

Sara Jo, as I remember was a very sweet and kind person. She was one of my first cousins,(Vera) I am so sorry to hear of her passing.

Dear Tammi, Laura and James, It is with sincere sympathy I am writing this note to your family. We are in Wisconsin visiting Carmen, and Judith called with the tragic news. I must share with you the occasional visits I would have with your mother. She always updated about each of you and what you were doing. She was concerned about James's health and his weight (I am sure he has that under control or is working on it). She was always so enthusiastic and beamed with pride when talking about each of you. Your parents reminded me of how ours worked together--Mother worked hard to see that the farm and garden projects were a success. Carmen said, "Mom, she always seemed like a person who was a good mother, always calm and pleasant with such a comforting nature." We will keep you and your father in our thoughts and prayers. So sorry for your loss! James and I went from 1st grade through high school together. I remember her as Mrs. Otter. She would help out as a room mother during special classroom events at Graham Creek! May God comfort you and give you peace at this time.

Prayers and love to Sara's family. Her oldest was my best friend in school years ago and I spent a lot of time on the farm with them all. Sara was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother.

Met Sara at our local quilt shop, became friends and was honored to quilt for her. She was such a sweetheart, always had a smile and loved to talk about her family and quilting. Will miss that sweet smile and the conversations we had! My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I always felt comfortable around Sara. Her smile and down home personality were always welcoming on Sunday morning. She also shared her beautiful flowers at church.
