William “Bill” Richard Toborg, 87, of Seymour, passed away on July 28, 2020 in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Seymour on March 30, 1933 to parents Louis and Josephine (Rittman) Toborg. On September 13, 1953, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, he married Janice (Sterling) Toborg.
Bill worked from 1950 to 1953 at Thompson Dairy in Seymour. He then proudly served his country in infantry operations and as an intelligence specialist in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. Bill retired after over 30 years of service with Cummins Engine Company. He was an incredibly hard worker from the time he was a child. He instilled this work ethic in all his children and family. Stern taskmaster, yes; but always fair.
As a confirmand of the first confirmation class of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Bill remained a dedicated member, extraordinarily strong in his faith, taking an active leadership role within the church. Bill was also a member of the American Legion.
Bill was a historian to the nth degree, though not through traditional schooling. He had a natural passion for the history of Jackson County and surrounding areas; and he enjoyed American history as well. Most questions, he had the answers too and if not, he always found the answers.
Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman back in his heyday and, till the end, loved his guns and knives. He was a storyteller, quite a storyteller; in fact, people would come over and visit just to hear his stories. His family and friends will perhaps miss that most of all.
Bill was, first and foremost, 100% dedicated to his family, there was absolutely nothing he would not have done for them. Son, husband, father, grandfather, big brother, and friend to all, he will be sorely missed.
Bill is survived by Jan, his beloved wife of 67 years; his children, Jennifer Day, Julie Calandro, JoBeth (Gerald) Morrow, and John Toborg; 6 grandchildren, Nathan Ray, Jonathan Ray, Andy Dorsett, Daniel Dorsett, Abigail Morrow, and Cooper Morrow; 8 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; brother, Robert (Donna) Toborg; sisters, Shirley Newkirk and Marilou (Ron) Harper.
He was proceeded in death by his parents; brother, Don Eugene; brother-in-law, James Newkirk; and son-in-law, Gary Calandro.
