Richard R. “Dick” Stickles, 82, of Seymour, passed away on July 13, 2021. He was born in 1938 to the late Ross M. and Mildred E. (Ledgerwood) Stickles in Odon, Indiana. Dick Stickles was one of the most positive influences on me throughout my life. He was such a gentleman and was as kind as they come. Also, he was one of my favorite coaches during my entire basketball career in which he coached both my eighth grade and freshman teams.
With his passing, Seymour and Jackson County lost a truly wonderful person.

There were seven of us first cousins, now there are six. We have always been a close knit group even though we're living hundreds or thousands of miles apart. We have lots of good memories from all the times we have gotten together for various types of family events. To the Family of Mr. Stickles,
Mr. Stickles made Adv. Algebra fun, interesting and sensible. Math was not always my strong suit, but I met with much success because of the instruction, patience, expertise and dedication of Mr. Stickles...he made sure I 'got it' before going on to the next Algebra challenge. I'm an educator now...1st grade...and I even tell my little 6 year-olds how much fun I had in Adv. Algebra because of a teacher like Mr. Stickles...hoping to inspire them to always give their best effort, ask questions and keep trying! Thank You, Mr. Stickles.
My thoughts, prayers and heartfelt sympathies to all of you. He was a great man in every sense of the word and I'm sure he will be greatly missed.

I have many fond memories of my summer vacations spent in Indiana with my Uncle Dick and family. Our family was blessed with great cooks and storytellers. So, after a bountiful feast of delicious food the family would gather and the reminiscing and storytelling would commence. My uncle Dick was a particularly great storyteller due to his keen memory for detail and talent for doing impersonations which added much humor. As a very young child one of my favorite impersonations that he did so well was Donald Duck.
The matriarch of our family was Nanny Delight (Trublood) Ledgerwood, my Great Grandmother and Dick's Grandmother. She was very proud of her family and their accomplishments. So, she ceremoniously granted our family with the title, "The Talented Set." This title has remained and has served as one of the humorous themes for subsequent family reunions. If someone would make a statement, "I don't know how we ever accomplished this," or someone had overcome some obstacle, my uncle Dick with eyebrows raised and a smirking smile would say, "You know, we are the talented set."
My uncle certainly was talented. He excelled at all of his endeavors while remaining very humble; basketball as a young man and later coaching basketball in high school, academics, mathematics, carpentry, family man and all around "good and kind person."
I had a great deal of love, admiration and respect for him and will miss him dearly.
I send my condolences to my cousins, Rick and Doug and their families.

Mr. Stickles loved his students & he wanted so much more for them. When I struggled with Pre-Calculus during my Senior year of high school, he would tutor me before school or after school because he wanted me to due well. When I graduated from I.U. with my B.S. in Education, I subbed for a year before I got my permanent position at SHS (mid eighties). When Nancy was dying of cancer, I subbed for Mr. Stickles for two weeks. He was uber organized at a time when his life was rife with sadness and grief. To make MY job easy teaching math was no simple feat! Also thanks to student PJ Hinton who saved my bacon in Pre-calculus. Dick Stickles was the consummate math teacher and coach. He was professional, kind, patient and a great motivator. I always looked up to him. Sometime during my first years of teaching biology, I did a display case titled, “When your Teachers were in High School.” Mr. Stickles contributed his yearbook from Oden and a few pictures. Low and behold, Mr. Stickles was an all-star athlete and major hunk. The girls went mad! They kept stopping by my room in groups to admire the display case just outside my door. I remember one starry-eyed freshman who said she wished she could go back in time. . . All I can say is she had great taste. What a wonderful man and master teacher. It was my privilege to be his friend and colleague. -Jan Hines
