Joan M. Elsner, age 86, of Seymour passed away on September 21, 2021.
She was a devoted member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, where she received all of her sacraments. She also took part in all ministries, though her favorites included being a Eucharistic minister, teaching religion to students, and helping with funeral dinners.
After graduating Seymour High School in 1953, Joan married Leonard Elsner in 1955. She later earned her Master’s degree in Education from Indiana University and went on to teach for Seymour Community Schools for 26 years.
Joan’s many hobbies included reading, gardening, and traveling. She especially loved traveling with her teacher friends to Europe, Australia, Hawaii, Alaska, and many other places throughout the United States. Her last big trip was to the Holy Land with her church family. Joan also enjoyed taking her husband on trips to Ireland, Switzerland, and Italy; however, drives throughout Indiana on a Sunday afternoon were a favorite as well.
Joan was a proud member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Daughters of Isabelle.
Joan was the daughter of Francis and Geneva (Nichter) Horstman, who preceded her in death and was also preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, of 55 years.
She is survived by her children Michael (Beth) Elsner, Kathy (Bill) Maschino, and Jeff (Darla) Elsner; seven grandchildren Branden (Krista) Elsner, Garrett (Caroline) Elsner, Taylor Elsner, Matthew (Wendy) Maschino, Bethany (Chad) Fewell, Kelly Elsner, and Craig Elsner; and five great-grandchildren Sam, Nate, and Nick Fewell and Isla and Maeva Maschino.
Funeral mass will be on Monday at 10am at St. Ambrose Catholic Church with Father Dan Staublin officiating and Deacon Mike East assisting.
Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery.
Friends and family may call from 4-7pm on Sunday at Voss Chapel. The Rosary will be recited at 3:45pm.
Memorial checks may be written to St. Ambrose School.

Sending my condolences to the family and loved ones of Mrs. Elsner. She was my 3rd and 5th grade teacher. I am 53 years old and to this day I fondly remember her for her kind demeanor, compassion for students, and enthusiasm for learning. She left an indelible impression upon me and I shall never forget her! She inspired me and countless others to do our best and keep reaching for our dreams! Kathy, I was so sorry to see that your mom passed!! She was such a sweet lady! I know that you all will miss her greatly, and my prayers for you all are that the many happy memories that you have will bring you comfort. Mike, Kathy, and Jeff and your families. Joan was such a wonderful cousin and family member. I will miss her. She always told me about my Great Grandma. I loved hearing the stories. My sincere sympathy to all of you. I will be praying. I hope she is rejoicing with Leonard in Heaven with our Lord.
