Mrs. Dorothea Rust, 94, of Cortland, died at 11:20 PM, Sunday, February 7th, 2010 at Lutheran Community Home.
Dorothea was born in Bartholomew County, on November 4, 1915, the daughter of Walter J. and Carolena (Winters) Newkirk
On June 9, 1940 she married Harry H. Rust, who preceded her in death August 30, 1999.
Dorothea was a homemaker and was involved in farming on the family farm with her husband. Dorothea was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Borchers, where she was baptized, confirmed, and married. She was a member of the Ladies Aid, Missionary Society, and Mary Martha Bible Study, where she served in many activities. She worked at the shirt factory before she was married. For many years, Dorothea and her siblings celebrated Thanksgiving with over 100 in attendance. She was loved for her painted turkey cookies. Dorothea was also loved for her marble chiffon birthday cakes, sugar cookies and homemade chicken and noodles. Her log cabin quilts were a favorite among over 50 quilts she pieced and quilted and many covers and pillows she enjoyed giving to her family.
Dorothea is survived by her daughter, Shirley (Larry) Lewis; her sons, Dennis (Linda) Rust, Delbert (Debbie) Rust, Wayne (Anna) Rust, Allan (Ann) Rust; grandchildren, Jeff Lewis, Chris Lewis, Greg Rust, Debora Herbert, Heidi Wheatley, Beth Ann Albert, Amanda Jackson, Bethany Ebener, Ben Rust, Rachel Rust, Rebecca Rust, James Rust, Timothy Rust; 11 great grandchildren; and sister, Bertha Breedlove.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one grandson; daughter-in-law, Patty Schafstall Rust; sister, Gladys Otte; brothers, Woodrow and Charles Newkirk; half brothers, Willard Newkirk, Harold Newkirk, Raymond Newkirk; half sister, Agnes Claycamp; and infant half sister, Gertrude Newkirk.
Funeral services will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Borchers, on Friday, February 12 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Stephen Wood officiating.
Burial will take place at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Borchers.
Friends may call at Voss Chapel, Seymour on Thursday, from 4:00-8:00 PM and on Friday at the church from 9:00 until time of service.
Memorials may be written to St. Paul New Church Facilities Fund, St. Paul Cemetery Fund or Donor's Choice.
