Mr. Carl Kriete, 75, of Cortland, IN, passed away at home on February 13, after a brave fight with cancer. Carl was born in Seymour, IN, on July 1, 1934, the son of Lawrence E. F. and Loveda (Smith) Kriete.
Carl was a member of the Apostolic Pentecostal Tabernacle. He graduated from Seymour High School in 1952 with his twin brother Darl. The brothers played golf, football, basketball, and baseball together for Seymour High School. After graduation, Carl served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a veteran and a proud member of the American Legion.
On June 30, 1968, he married Maxine Reichenba, who survives. During their marriage, the two of them enjoyed many long road trips and eventually traveled through the lower 48 states. Maxine's sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Bob Callahan, often accompanied them.
Carl was an avid NASCAR fan and often planned other activities around the race schedule. He and Maxine enjoyed working in their yard together to keep up their vegetable garden and many flower gardens. They were always on watch for hummingbirds and butterflies. In the late fall, Carl loved decorating the house and yard for the Christmas season.
Carl had been a volunteer coach and manager with the Seymour Little League program. He continued to enjoy playing golf with Darl and the boys as often as possible. Over the years, Carl traveled all parts of Indiana to watch the kids and grandkids participate in their activities.
Early in his working career, Carl held positions as police officer and a fireman in Seymour. He was a security guard at Atterbury Job Corps and worked for several years at Amoco. Carl also was employed as a custodian for Seymour Community Schools, and he especially enjoyed the children at Cortland Elementary. Carl retired from the Indiana Department of Transportation in 1999.
His wife Maxine Reichenba Kriete survives. Carl is also survived by his children, Darlena (Norman) Engleking, Janice (Lee) White, James E. "Gene" Thompson, Mark (Kathy) Thompson, Sherry (Bruce) Holder, and Tim Thompson; grandchildren, Darla (Steve) Bowling, Jelisa Miller, Rex (Jessica) Miller, Jessica (Jeremy) Wetzel, Alison (Chris) Constantine, Matt Thompson, Ellen Thompson, Korey Thompson, Grant Holder, Kelsey Holder, Blake Holder, Kaitlyn Thompson; 7 great grandchildren; sisters, Sue (Tom) Dunn, Nikki Foist; and twin brother Darl (Marilyn) Kriete.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James Kriete, Edward Leroy Kriete, Robert E. Kriete; and sister, Helen Louise Durham.
