Betty June Elsner, age 78, died in her apartment at The Stratford at West Clay, Carmel, Indiana, Wednesday, December 30, 2009.  She was born December 28, 1931, the only child of Robert and Esther (Wehmiller) Kiel.

She was a graduate of Seymour High School and Chamberlain School of Retailing, Boston, Massachusetts.  After graduation, she worked in the Personnel Department of L.S. Ayres & Co., in Indianapolis.

On May 8th, 1955, she married Edward P. Elsner, Jr.  They were married until his death on April 27, 2007.

She was a lifelong active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Seymour, serving on the Music Committee, the Stewardship Board, the Foundation Board and was responsible for starting the Oktoberfest Booth for the church.  She was a volunteer for the Women's Committee at the Lutheran Community Home and served as a reader for ten years.

She was a thirty year member and past President of Delta Theta Tau Philanthropic Sorority.  Also, she was a member since 1957 in the State Assembly Women's Club, serving as Secretary in 1961-62.

She was a Girl Scout Leader for Troop 204 and was on the local advisory board of the Tulip Trace Council.  Mrs. Elsner served seventeen years on the Women's Council of the Boys Club.

She was on the Board of the American Cancer Society when she served as Service Director arranging over 200 transports to Indianapolis and Louisville for cancer patients.  She was also Jackson County Representative on the State Cancer Board.

Mrs. Elsner helped organize the "Friends of the Library" in Jackson County, and was on the Bylaws Committee to select and outline a proposed format for the group.  She was also a member and twice President of the All Thumbs Garden Club in Seymour.

She was a member of the Indiana State Symphony Society and the Jackson County Symphony Women's Committee, being selected as Volunteer of the Year in 1995.  Mrs. Elsner was also a member of the Jackson County Historical Society, and a lifelong member of the Humane Society.

She was an avid reader, world traveler and a patron of the arts, but most importantly, she was a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her children Stephen E. Elsner (Mary), Carmel, IN; Margaret Eileen (Peg) Dunn (Brent), Fishers, IN; Elaine Buttrum Mittleman, Falls Church, VA; and Dr. Ann E. Elsner (Dr. Stephen Burns), Bloomington, IN; seven grandchildren:  Stephanie (Elsner) Ripma (Robert), Carmel, IN and Amy Elsner, Atlanta, GA; Katelyn, Michael and Connor Dunn, Fishers, IN; Carol Buttrum Gardner (Trent), Newburgh, IN; Rebecca Burns, Bloomington, IN; and two great-grandchildren:  Taylor and Kelsey Gardner, Newburgh, IN.

The Rev. Ralph Blomenberg, the Rev. Philip E. Bloch and the Rev. James Rodriguez will conduct funeral services at 4:00 PM Sunday, January 3, at Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Friends may call from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on Sunday at the chapel at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Seymour.
Burial Services will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Elsner Humanitarian Fund in Greater Seymour Trust Fund, in care of Jackson County Bank or the Elsner Foundation Fund at Immanuel Lutheran Church.   Voss & Sons Funeral Service, 316 North Chestnut Street, Seymour, IN, 47274 has been entrusted with all arrangements.
