Cremation Services

The Cremation

As a funeral service we believe the value of personalization, sharing memories and coming to grips with the reality of a death.  At times, families believe that a simple cremation is more convenient but later regret not saying goodbye to their loved one in a proper way.  A person was once overheard saying "we make a big fuss over the birth of a baby that is brand new to the world and under celebrate the death of someone that lived a full rewarding life!"

Our funeral professionals are here to help you decide what is right for your family.  For generations, Voss and Sons has prided itself in offering a wide range of services.  The choices are yours.

Cremation is an alternative to earth burial or entombment for the body's final disposition and often follows a traditional funeral service.  Because cremation is an irreversible process and because the process itself will prevent the ability to determine the exact cause of death, many states require that each cremation be authorized by the coroner or medical examiner.  Some states have specific minimum time limits that must elapse before cremation may take place.  In Indiana that amount of time is 48 hours.  During this time period refrigeration or embalming are the only alternatives to retard tissue decomposition.  Cremation is performed by placing the deceased in a casket or other container and then placing that container or casket into a cremation chamber or retort.  Only one casket or container is cremated at a time.  The chamber temperature is raised to approximately 1400 to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit.  After approximately 2 to 2 1/2 hours, all organic matter is consumed by heat or evaporation.  The remaining bone fragments are known as cremated remains.  The cremated remains are then carefully removed from the cremation chamber.  Any metal is removed with a magnet and later disposed in an approved manner.  The entire ash and fragment volume is then run through a processor, creating a uniform powder-like texture.  The remains are then placed in a container provided by the crematorium or placed in a urn purchased by the family.  The entire process takes approximately three hours.  Throughout the cremation process, a carefully controlled labeling system ensures correct identification.

We are very proud to be a part of Tri-County Crematory.  This brand new state-of –the-art facility, which opened in January 2009, is located at 101 W. 4th Street in Seymour. It  is the first crematory in Jackson County.  Feel free to stop by and ask for a tour.  This beautiful building gives families the option to be present during the cremation process and provides peace of mind knowing your loved one will not be taken to some far away location to an unknown third party.  While many crematories are located in garages or even lesser buildings, we have a clean and modern building with a warm, friendly environment for our families.

We here at Voss Funeral Service pride ourselves in our "service after the service".
